     wow
     Rating:
this is my first introduction to zao, it was an impulse buy at my cd shop and i was instantly blown away by this cd...first off i love the vocals, being a fan of beneath the sky, but more importantly i love the intensity of the album while still maintaining good melody...this blows so much of the modern day metalcore crap out of the water...it combines the intensity of hardcore with nice melody...i will definately check out their other releases

Customer Reviews for The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here Cd
Decent, but nothing like their old stuff
     Rating:
I thought this album was a mediocre attempt at recreating Zao's rawness and brutality before The Funeral of God CD. Their attempt was so pronounced that they intentionally lowered the album's production quality for effect. What results is a very loud, screeching wall of distortion that loses its effect once the melodic singing kicks in. If they were going for nostalgia and rawness, they should have left Scott Mellinger's singing vocals out completely -- which detracts from the intended "brutal" experience and sounds unimpressive anyway -- and stuck with Dan Weyandt's screams.

As for the screaming vocals, it would have done better if it sounded distinguishable from the melody. Instead it meshes into a static whisper and fails to stick out. Furthermore, a little variety within the songs could have been nice. Every song seems to follow the same generic, repetitious template.

So yes, I say this was a mediocre attempt. Zao's old stuff was chaotic, yet beautiful -- in which despite the chaos, the music and vocals seem to fit perfectly together in some deranged and artistic way. The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here, on the other hand, seems to be so focused at trying to be raw that it loses the magic of spontaneity. What results is a clearly orchestrated attempt at recreating Zao's old synergistic greatness as present in their classic Liberate Te Ex Inferis and the Self Titled album.

To witness Zao at their zenith, buy the Legendary album. You'll feel and hear the difference.

Editorial Reviews for The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here Audio Cd
     Album Description
"If the melodic end of the kingdom has been taken by Killswitch Engage then the extreme end belongs to Zao. No question." -- Metal Hammer ZAO?s has spent the past 10 years at the forefront of the metal and hardcore scene. Through breakups, reformations and countless tours; the band has exposed their beliefs and their hearts to the fevered masses. The band?s newest testament, "The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here" combines the dark and creepy vibe of early albums, with the rock n' roll thunder of and the metallic fury of more recent outings.

This time around, famed recording engineer Steve Albini invited Zao to make their new album with him at his Chicago studio, and the band (all four of them longtime fans of his recordings) obliged. With an album's worth of songs fine-tuned over several months, lyrics and vocals stronger than ever, the band laid down what promises to be another landmark work: "The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here."

Many of the luminaries of today's heavy music scene are well aware of their debt to the band. Underoath and Unearth opened for Zao. Thrice and Fall Out Boy listened to Zao while growing up. As I Lay Dying invited Dan Weyandt to guest on their last album and Matt Heafy from Trivium joined the band onstage to perform "Praise The War Machine." Zao, a band whose backwoods roots have allowed them to stay one step ahead of the trends by staying true to their isolated selves.
