Reviews Customer Reviews for Marching Out He's a Viking.......I guess???? Rating: I was a big fan of Yngwie Malmsteen's third album "Trilogy" so I picked up his other acclaimed 80's disks. Of the first 3, I have to say "Marching Out" is the weakest. The songs are repetitive, and nothing really stands out on the disk except for the single "I'll See The Light Tonight". The rest of the disk features some decent guitar work, but it's almost like Malmsteen's guitar is wedged into songs where it doesn't really fit. Tunes like "Disciples of Hell", "Anguish and Fear" and "I Am A Viking" are just calling out for a slow, Black Sabbath like guitar track as opposed to Malmsteen's blisting hair-metal-esque style. There is plenty of talent here for sure, but it's not channeled in the right direction. "Trilogy" seemed to capture the band at the top of their game, and everything came together. "Marching Out" feels as if the band is still trying to find their sound.
Customer Reviews for Marching Out Cd Malmsteen's Fading Glory Rating: Not a bad follow-up to the mostly instrumental debut but the album just lacks vitality in creative songwriting. DeSoto never wanted to be a metal singer and was looking for a gig as a power rock singer to the likes of Survivor: it sounds like it. I had the unique opportunity of seeing Malmsteen perform on his own. Great soloist without question but having a band is just that: being a band and not just a soloist. Malmsteen just gives no room for anybody else and the music suffers. Yngwie is just not a talented songwriter and neither is DeSoto. In addition to the instrumentals, the best songs on this album are 'I'll see the Light Tonight', 'Disciples of Hell', 'I am a Viking', and 'Anguish and Fear.' The rest just falls flat. Even 'I am a Viking' gets tiring as Yngwie is just writing lyrics about himself and what a great guitarist he is compared to everyone else. What an ego!
I saw Malmsteen perform as a stand in with Dio in Irvine and he sounded great. He would have been a perfect replacement for Vivian Campbell. It would have made for an interesting collaboration but I don't think the egos of either performer would have gotten along: too bad. Ultimately, the main impediment to Yngwie's success was his overwhelming ego at wanting to be the whole band and trying to turn metal into classical. And so, true to his Swedish pseudonym of 'Yngwie', he ended up remaining just that: just a 'little viking.'
