Reviews Customer Reviews for Strangers Almanac the songs remain the same Rating: Gotta say this album did very little for me. Yes, many of the songs are easy-listeners, but it gets monotonous after a while. And we're talking about 20-plus songs here! For me it was too much quantity and very little quality.
And...either the Drive-by Truckers are owed an apology or Ryan Adams' band has one coming, because much of the music is unbelievably similar.
Customer Reviews for Strangers Almanac Cd Meet a life-long companion Rating: Ryan Adams. What a songwriter. Some say he's too prolific. He's not. He's just the lazy listener's nightmare. Of course some releases are better than others, but he really hasn't released anything so far that shouldn't be heard by the actual fans. Some say his debut album Heartbreaker is the best thing he's ever done. I don't agree. It's excellent, but my personal favorite is Cold Roses. And this Whiskeytown album - Strangers Almanac. Now, if you're new to Ryan Adams (or Alt-Country in general) this is the place to start. The songwriting, the lyrics, the arrangements, the muscianship, the lead and backing vocals...well, it simply does not get much better than this. This is an album / cd that I will listen to for the rest of my life, that's how much it resonates with me. If I could only pick one album by each of my favorite songwriters, Strangers Almanac would be in my all-time top 5 and remain there.
Editorial Reviews for Strangers Almanac Audio Cd Album Description STRANGERS ALMANAC was Whiskeytown's penultimate album. The band is still steeped in the sounds of country and Gram Parsons-inspired country-rock here, but one can hear the music moving toward the pop of their final effort PNEUMONIA. Everything still centers around the voice and excellent songwriting of Ryan Adams (who was still only 22 at the time of this album's release). The song "16 Days," for example, with its breezy, open-road, country vibe and the lovely interlocking harmonies between Adams and violinist Caitlin Cary, was released as a single, and rightfully so. There is also the beautiful, melancholic weeper "Dancing With the Women at the Bar," and a revisitiation of "Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight," which appeared on the band's debut. Adams's talent shines so brightly here, in fact, that it is little wonder he would soon be pursuing a solo career (the internal tensions in the band would hasten its dissolution as well), but STRANGERS ALMANAC captures this fine, short-lived, alt-country band in full effect.
