     Amazing New release
     Rating:
This is a wonderful CD. I was totally surprised by this and how strong it is. They are as witty and musical now as they have ever been if not better. Mike Scott is iconic like Peter Gabriel or Michael Franti. He is witty, sensitive and global. "Sustain" is about maintaining dignity in the face of torture and adversity. "She tried to hold me" is clever and witty covering a girl friend who lingered like uranium. I saw them live recently and was even more impressed. If you have other CD's by them and like them; buy this. If this is your first exposure, lucky you.

     Better!
     Rating:
For a record or two it seemed to me the Waterboys had let go of a part of their music that I personally enjoyed the most. Songs like the ones found in "Fisherman Blues" where they played almost to perfection, where Mike Scott was writing songs that not only touched the heart but pulled at it. I always claimed that "Room to Roam" is an awesome album and I still maintain that the set of songs in that album are something to behold. Songs from that album starting with "In Search of a Rose" to the final "Room to Roam" and all in between are to me quite enjoyable over the years. Then came "Dream Harder" and the following albums and I felt Mike Scott had sacrificed some of his magic to achieve something else entirely. Less Wind Instrumentation, leaning more on guitars still with enough genius in his lyrics to make it all worthwhile but not quite the greatness exhibited on "Fisherman Blues" and also (to me) "Room to Roam". With "Book of Lightning" The Waterboys return to their past splendor, a little more melodic a little less heavy guitar work. Not quite as brilliant as what I like to call their Best, but frankly dangerously close. One thing for sure, Mike Scott is one of the best out there, his lyrics cut right through you and the Waterboys music can only be described as beautiful when in full swing. I always buy the latest of The Waterboys and I have also purchased Mike Scott solo albums so anyone can tell I try. I just find them essential listening in my little world for I am always hoping to hear the kind of song that only them can provide. In the same vein I buy all the music that comes from "World Party", it seems the Waterboys and World Party elicit the same kind of response from me. I just love that kind of clever, refreshing and quality music they produce. This CD is much better than the previous two albums and in a way is a return to form, to the music I eagerly long for to hear from them. 4 Stars because I am sure they are capable of so much more that I have to leave room for the next 5 Stars from them. Love their words, Love their music and have nothing but the outmost respect for Mike Scott, who I believe is one of the greatest of this and other generations, and the Waterboys who are as good as good can be.

Editorial Reviews for Book Of Lightning Audio Cd
     Album Description
For over twenty years The Waterboys have been a testament to Mike Scott's extraordinary vision and his fearless love of musical exploration. With songs ranking as some of the most imaginative and distinctive of the past quarter century, The Waterboys have scored the dreams and aspirations of generations of music listeners. Now with Book Of Lightning, The Waterboys have created a natural successor to their classics This Is The Sea and Fisherman's Blues and 2000's acclaimed comeback, A Rock In The Weary Land--an album containing elements of those powerful works, but also taking us into thrilling new territory; an album as literate and compelling as anything in The Waterboys' catalog to date. As the opening bars of `The Crash of Angel Wings' thunder out, we know that Book Of Lightning is going to be a new, unpredictable installment in The Waterboys' story. Book Of Lightning was recorded in London in Fall 2006 and was produced by Mike Scott and Philip Tennant, who previously worked with The Waterboys on Fisherman's Blues. The album features electric fiddler Steve Wickham, whose involvement in the band dates back to 1985. Mike Scott is also joined by regular Waterboys' keyboardist Richard Naiff, Louisiana-born drummer Brady Blade, top London drummer Jeremy Stacey, bassman Mark Smith, hot young guitar stylist Leo Abrahams and long-time Waterboys alumni Roddy Lorimer (trumpet), Thighpaulsandra (keyboards) and Chris Bruce (electric guitar). In addition,"Sustain" was recorded in Vancouver with members of Canadian art-rockers Great Aunt Ida. By turns savage, beautiful, haunting and bitingly humorous, Book Of Lightning is brilliantly bound together by Scott's lyrical talents, which have taken on even more maturity and confidence. The consistent presence of weather and nature throughout the lyrics and sound of Book Of Lightning acts as a masterful unifying stroke, drawing us into a world that could only be created by Mike Scott at that moment in time--a world that is a mirror of Scott's self-awareness, his understanding of nature of love, and his observance of the destructive effects of the glamour of power.
