Reviews Customer Reviews for Christmas Caravan Hop on the Christmas Caravan Rating: The Squirrel Nut Zippers contribute to the yuletide musical fair with the 1998 release, CHRISTMAS CARAVAN. The record contains ten fun, quirky, and jazzy tunes to last through the Christmas holiday. All of the songs are memorable and may be an alternative from the traditional and overplayed songs that rotate during this time of the year.
The tracks on the album possess a vintage and old-fashioned style of melodies. For listeners who enjoy a little bit of swing or bluegrass, this record has that quality. The album opens with "Winter Weather" and in between are a collection of songs from the familiar, "Sleigh Ride," to the obscure, "Hanging up my Stockings." And if one waits before the record ends, there is an extra track that is not notated on the album sleeve -- a very static version of "Hanging up my Stockings," which may have been a demo version of the song possibly done by the original artist or one of those make-your-own records; it sounds so old.
CHRISTMAS CARAVAN is a delight to hear. It is the type of record that will definitely get the feet stomping or for the dancers out there, cutting the rug doing the jitter bug. This is a great album to add to one's Christmas album collection.
Customer Reviews for Christmas Caravan Cd Hit or miss but the hits are WELL worth it. Rating: There are definitely some tracks I skip on this Christmas record. But it's well worth the purchase price just for the truly phenomenal rendition of "Sleigh Ride", easily the most raucous, terrific, wonderful version of that song I've ever heard. Other standouts include the interpretation of "Winter Weather," which is just dripping with sass, "Carolina Christmas" and "Hot Christmas", which are a blast, and "Indian Giver" which is a heck of a fun shot at yuletide blues. The downtempo numbers aren't my favorites, and frankly a few of them are just a little too much of a bummer if you're trying to be festive.
Anyway, though: the half of this album that hits is easily worth the purchase.
Editorial Reviews for Christmas Caravan Audio Cd Amazon.com Christmas Caravan finds the Zippers showing off not only their command of early jazz styles but also some deep blues roots ("Indian Giver") and an appreciation for cowboy music ("I'm Coming Home for Christmas"). Singer Katherine Whalen shines on a typically saucy rendition of "Winter Weather" and a number that would fit right in on Bummed Out Christmas: "A Johnny Ace Christmas," which memorializes the R&B singer killed in a December 24, 1954, backstage Russian roulette game. --Rickey Wright
