Reviews Customer Reviews for Big Squeeze The Very Best Of Squeeze LOUD, LOUD, LOUD (DID I MENTION, "LOUD"?) Rating:
There are a plethora of Squeeze compilations in existence with a varying range of audio quality.
However, for this latest release, every channel has been CRANKED to maximum volume. The original dynamic range of every track has been totally eliminated.
It will probably sound great thru earbuds, but on a decent sound system, it's just too much. By the time you've made it thru both discs, you'll have a headache.
If you do decide to run this thru a sound system, you actually need to exercise caution, as the now-over-amp'd bass at the beginning of "Another Nail In My Heart" might tear the woofer out of your speakers, and/or cause your amp to clip... either way, it has the possibility of being NOT pretty.
For critical listening, any of the (individual album) late-90's UK remasters, or '07 Japan mini-sleeve remasters, are preferable to this abomination.
However, if you plan on ripping for exclusive portable playback, this mastering approach will probably make earbud playback more enjoyable.
Customer Reviews for Big Squeeze The Very Best Of Squeeze Cd Big Squeeze: The Very Best of Squeeze Rating: I would highly recommend this compilation to any Squeeze fan or for anyone who'd like to get an excellent overview of their body of work. The B-sides disk is especially interesting and contains some real gems. Great stuf!!!
Editorial Reviews for Big Squeeze The Very Best Of Squeeze Audio Cd Album Description European only 2CD+DVD (PAL/Region 0). After seven greatest hits compilations, one may wonder why another is needed, but neither 1982's Singles 45's & Under nor 1994's Greatest Hits (the best of the seven) covered the entirety of the band's career. The Very Best of is the attempt to remedy this, as it is the first hits compilation that covers the band from 1977 to 1998, including most of the important singles as well as tacking on a bonus disc of B-sides. Squeeze released some great singles and for a casual fan, this is truly the best introduction. Big Squeeze includes the entirety of Singles 45's & Under (except for the substitution of 'Labeled With Love' for 'If I Didn't Love You') and then goes on to include their more important later-day singles, including their biggest U.S. chart hit, 1987's 'Hourglass', and their 1995 Top 20 British comeback, 'This Summer'. The second disc is an interesting journey through Squeeze's B-sides catalog, most of which live up to the high standard of the band's singles and album cuts. There is also an insightful track-by-track commentary written by both Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford. The DVD features 17 of the band's music videos. Universal. 2005. * Please note you will need an All Code DVD player to view.
