Reviews Customer Reviews for The Spirit Of 67 The Spirit of '67 Rating: This is my favorite studio album by the Raiders. If the truth were to be told I would have to confess this was my first group that I really got into. I wanted to be like Mark Lindsay; I wanted a ponytail, tight white pants & tall, black riding boots. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was the tricorner hat but I would've wore it too. I thought they were the greatest. I got to watch them five days a week on tv & I couldn't get enough. Alas, I am older & wiser now. There isn't any way that they could be compared to the Beatles, not even close, but I thought so at the time. But it was like the first girlfriend you had, holding her hand, hugging her & kissing her; she might not have been your true love but you won't EVER forget her. That's how I feel about the Raiders. They will always be special to me even when I know they weren't the greatset band in rock 'n' roll.
The Spirit of '67 peaked at #9 on the charts. There were three singles released from the album; "Hungry" going to #6, one of the best songs they ever recorded, "The Great Airplane Strike" peaked at #20 & "Good Thing" went to #4, another great song they wrote & recorded. At this stage of their career they could do no wrong. Outstanding album tracks include "Louise", listen to the bassist Phil Volk, he was good, "Why? Why? Why? (Is It So Hard)" written & sung by Volk & "1001 Arabian Nights", one of the most unique songs the Raiders ever recorded & wrote. It's my suspicion that Terry Melcher, the producer, was the studio genius behind this song. The remaining songs "All About Her", "In My Community", "Oh! To Be a Man", "Undecided Man" (somewhat similar to the Beatles "Eleanor Rigby") are excellent album tracks. Only the song "Our Candidate", written & vocalized by the drummer Mike 'Smitty' Smith, is a throwaway but it has his tongue firmly in cheek.
Sundazed has graced this album with three bonus tracks; "You're a Bad Girl", a studio outtake that indicates the musical direction that Mark Lindsay was going to take the group & the single version of "The Great Airplane Strike". This is the actual version that went to #20 on the charts. Also included is an alternate, never released version of "Hungry" that is 34 seconds longer. Not included in the track listing, but after the final song, is a radio commercial advertising The Spirit of '67 album. It's a hoot with all of its groovy sixties lingo!
The Spirit of '67 is probably the best, most consistent album the Raiders would produce in their career.

Oh "Louise", "Why W.W.(is it so hard)" Oh! To Be A Man finishes my Side 1 LP. Side 2 starts with the 45 Hungry, then Flip side Undecided Man. Next is Our Candidate (cool!) a funny 1 called 1001 Arabian Nights & listen to Great Airplane Strike!(no WONDER you don't hear it on the Oldie stations!)

Editorial Reviews for The Spirit Of 67 Audio Cd Album Description By the time they recorded their third Top Ten album The Spirit of '67, Paul Revere and the Raiders were firmly established as one of America's best and most popular homegrown rock 'n' roll acts. The band had also begun to spread its wings creatively, expanding the garage-flavored rock 'n' roll of their early hits into more ambitious and sophisticated musical territory. Along with such classic Raiders smashes as "Hungry," "Good Thing" and "The Great Airplane Strike," The Spirit of '67 finds the quintet embracing psychedelia on such tunes as "Oh! To Be a Man," "1001 Arabian Nights" and "Undecided Man," while delivering memorable showcases for bassist Phil "Fang" Volk ("Why? Why? Why?") and drummer Michael "Smitty" Smith ("Our Candidate"). This expanded edition augments the original 11-song album with three rare bonus tracks, including an alternate version of "Hungry" and the single mix of "The Great Airplane Strike."
