Reviews Customer Reviews for The Divine Comedy Mesmerizing from the start Rating: I first discovered Milla's voice in the movie Dazed and Confused but honestly did not give it a second thought even though I thought she sounded decent. Fast forward a few years later and I was watching a movie called It's My Party. All of a sudden I heard this song that I immediately fell in love with (It's Your Life). I was surprised to read in the credits that it was Milla.
I special ordered the CD back then and it is still a CD I turn to quite often. There have been many reviews out there about her. Some I believe are extremely harsh and come from a sad place of people being close minded. Her voice is melodic, her words haunting and melody enticing. Coming from someone who usually listens to the likes of Elvis, Nine Inch Nails, Cat Stevens, Type O Negative and such I set my expectations entirely too low. Milla captivated me with this album and I will remain a true fan. I only wish there were more out there that she made that I could get my hands on.
I say give this CD a shot. It is quite different from what most people nowadays deem acceptable. I hate comparisons but if you enjoy the vocal stylings of Kate Bush, Tori Amos and a bit of folk funkiness (?) then you will not be disappointed.
Customer Reviews for The Divine Comedy Cd Really? People really like this? Rating: First of all, I love Milla. I generally enjoy her movies and she is a stunning actress, but this.... Well, yuck. The songs are poorly written, and the vocals are pretty iffy. The best song was the cover of an old folk tune. You can really tell she wrote some of this stuff when she was 15. I am amazed that people like it so much! The production quality is also really bad. (I have friends who make better albums in their closets.) I think that Milla has a pretty voice and is probably capable of making a great album, unfortunately this is not it.
Editorial Reviews for The Divine Comedy Audio Cd Amazon.com You'd expect this to be a travesty. Milla Jovovich is a model and actress (The Fifth Element, He Got Game) who decided to put out an album of dark, lyrical art-rock in the manner of Dead Can Dance or This Mortal Coil. That's a demanding genre, littered with the bones and witchy jewelry of dozens of histrionic types who got the image thing right, but who never ironed out the "singing" and "songwriting" aspects of it all. Model? Actress? (Gong!) ... Next! Except The Divine Comedy is a stunningly good album, with folky-pastoral instrumentation, haunting, accomplished vocals, and tight songwriting. There are, it's true, session pros all over this CD--which tempers the awe a bit--but nonetheless, it's a real gem from an unlikely source. --Gavin McNett
