     A True Epic orchestral-metal album
     Rating:
Albums like these are bound to have split opinions for the following reason: ManOwaR music appeals simultaneously to people with different music motivations. Ultimately, what matters, is what the listener seeks in the music.

Some desire just the metal sound, that most metal bands are capable of delivering. The underlying motivations are getting a sense of fast action, a more lively feeling and perhaps a sense of power. In younger ages the motivation for hearing metal can be for all the above reasons plus "it's cool" or "I want to be different" and so on. It is my opinion that this crowd is very narrow in it's artistic interpretation of what True Metal really is.

Others listen to ManOwaR for the emotional and spiritual states that the sense of epic-ness produces in their beings. This epic-ness is inspiring and it reconnects one with their inner sense of power making their wordly limitations fade to inexistence - even if for a very brief moment of time. How this epic-ness is produced (music-wise), doesn't matter to this audience - as long as the epic feelings are produced in large quantities... this could be whether the song is Battle Hymn, Revelations, March for Revenge, Defender, Hail and Kill, Heart of Steel, Crown and the King, Master of The Wind, Today is a Good Day to Die, Call to Arms, Swords in the Wind etc etc.. all these songs have parts in them that can raise body-hair in the listener, if the listener is properly focused, no matter what music technique was used to produce this effect.. from proper wording and lyrics, from Eric's vocals in many tracks, from guitar solos and drums (like today is a good day to die which is totally lyric-less) to strings, violins, flutes, pipe organs and chorus in tracks ranging in diversity from the Crown and the Ring to the American Trilogy. Someone wrote about the Elvis cover being a low point, but how can you not FEEL these inspiring feelings when the piano (3'10), then Karl and Joey kicks in in 3'17 and then Eric kicks in (3'30), along with the choir in the "GLOOOOOORYYYYY GLOOOOORYYY" ????? Unless of course, you don't really *GET IT* because you're not in the second type of crowd and only care for the narrowed-sense-metal that I described above.

Now, onto the album itself, Gods of War achieves good levels of producing epic feelings and it is one of the best epic albums ManOwaR has ever made, if not the best. One of the highlights, that I think other reviews miss, is how the Army of the Deads pt1, pt2 and Odin are "weaved together", while at the same time being time-distanced in the album.. it's like an escalation waiting to happen with a very fitting ending where in the start you get "the catch" of the chorus, then it sticks in your head, you re-hear it enhanced (pipe organ) and finally you hear it as a part of the metal track (Odin).

A similar thing happens with the Overture and the actual Hymn to the Immortal Warrior - although I think the CD should perhaps start with the Ascension, which I think is quite good (narration could use some improvement) and, Eric is magnificent making a perfect transition to the King of Kings.

If I'd have to change something in this album then

-I would remove the bonus track and perhaps blood brothers (which, despite being very good, is more Warriors of the World material) because I think they do not fit so well
-Glory Majest Unity would be removed (combined with the narrating of the end of the previous track, adds up to too much narrating that doesn't actually add epic feeling to any justifiable-for-it's-existence degree).
-Army of the Dead pt2 would get a makeover regarding the use of pipe organs. I'm sure they were added to enhance the epic feeling but it's not as majestic as it should be nor as perfect in the instruments use as the Crown and the Ring for example.
-I would improve the narration with a more real and far less digitized-sounding version.

With the understanding that great music doesn't just fall from the sky but requires great effort and time (unlike criticism which can be found fast and plenty) this album simply can't get anything less than 4.5 stars from me for all the great work that it embeds. ManOwaR did a really nice job and I hope this can be repeated in the future.

     Beautiful Album!
     Rating:
I've been listening to a lot of music involving Nordic themes, as well as Celtic themes, and with my playing Warhammer Online a lot, I must say, I'm addicted to this! If I'm not listening to it while playing my game, I'm listening to this album while at work.

Editorial Reviews for Gods Of War Audio Cd
     Album Description
Manowar is a band that has set standards, broken records and won great accolades during its storied career. Known to their worldwide supporters as the "Kings Of Metal", the band has constantly redefined heavy metal by combining peerless musicianship and song writing with their undeniable commitment to true metal and their devoted fans. The band has always made the solemn pledge to create original music that is louder than hell and stronger than steel. The long standing lineup of vocalist Eric Adams, guitarist Karl Logan, drummer Scott Columbus and bassist Joey DeMaio is truly a force to be reckoned with in the studio and on stage. In addition they are the originators of the musical styles known as power metal and true metal.

As Manowar now prepares to unveil their tenth studio album, expectations from fans are higher than ever and Manowar are sure to exceed those expectations. The new album Gods Of War is Manowar's first entry in a cycle of concept albums; each a tribute to a different war god. Gods Of War brings out the greatest of Manowar's musical attributes by utilizing both epic song structures and dramatic narratives. Much like Ragnarok - the final battle at the end of the world - when listening to Manowar's epic saga, the earth will shake, the walls will crumble and only true fans of metal will remain standing, heads held high, with the triumphant glimmer of a battle well-fought in their eyes.

Gods Of War features brand new cover artwork by the world's leading fantasy artist Ken Kelly, as well as a scorching mix done by the unparalleled Ronald Prent.

Besides the normal Jewel Case version, Gods Of War will also be released as a limited edition in an embossed metal slipcase containing a high grade mediabook bound in leather.Furthermore, this limited edition will feature a bonus DVD with unreleased material about the making of this album and some special behind-the-scenes footage. A double-vinyl LP in a gatefold sleeve will also be available.

In their career Manowar has released 9 studio albums, two live albums and 5 DVDs with sales of over nine million records worldwide, as well as silver and gold records and numerous other industry awards. The last studio album Warriors Of The World was a critically-acclaimed worldwide chart topper, reaching gold status in Germany.
