Reviews Customer Reviews for Leftoverture Positively Timeless Rating: Having been a fan of Kansas for over 30 years, I still enjoy every single note of their best album, LEFTOVERTURE. When it was first released in the mid-Seventies, I was a skull full of mush at the University of Oklahoma. I had this album on my turntable (yes, boys and girls, turntable) 24/7, whether I was cramming for a history exam or sipping brewskies in the wee hours of the morning. And as a disc jockey at the time, you could bet the farm that the "Carry On Wayward Son" 45 would be played at least once an hour during my shift.
Good times.
Kansas has all the components: sensational musicianship, outstanding vocals, clean, crisp rifts. "Wayward Son" and "Questions of My Childhood" are by far my favorite tracks, but on LEFTOVERTURE it's all good. And timeless. The music is just as stirring and stimulating now as it was 30 years ago; it's rock that conforms to any subsequent generation.
Which is a good thing, as the Seventies saw a handful of bands (Kansas, Boston, Blue Oyster Cult, to name a few) successfully transition rock from classic to contemporary (or progressive rock, as many prefer to designate). And Kansas' LEFTOVERTURE is a steady, timeless representative of the best the Seventies have to offer--then and now.

Customer Reviews for Leftoverture Cd Leftoverture - not quite the Point Rating: Leftoverture starts off with a pure classic but then seems somewhat lacking for the next few tracks only picking up toward the end with the promise of things yet to come. Not as consistent as the real breakthrough down here in Oz - Point of Know Return - but still a must for any Kansas fan's library. Anyway by today's standards it's a breath of much needed fresh air for us old 70s rockers decaying away in middle age. And yes the remastering is very good!!!
Editorial Reviews for Leftoverture Audio Cd Amazon.com The cover of 1976's Leftoverture pictures a bearded Da Vinci character composing reams of music score with a quill. Appropriate imagery for a band who combined the compositionally complex approach of British bands such as Genesis and Yes with solid Southern-rock jamming. Kansas wasn't new in '76--the group had escaped Topeka, Kansas, to record three prior albums, including the exciting Masque and Song for America. They joined the arena circuit via Leftoverture's "Carry On Wayward Son," an instant hit with its explosive vocal arrangement and indelible guitar riff. For straight-ahead rockers ("What's on Your Mind?") and ornate epics (the five-part suite "Magnum Opus"), guitarist Kerry Livgren and keyboardist Steve Walsh dramatically pair vocal harmonies over classical- and jazz-inspired structures. The 2001 expanded and remixed edition includes live versions of "Carry on Wayward Son" and "Cheyenne Anthem," as well as new liner notes by David Wild. --James Rotondi
