John Denver's LIVE Recordings are the BEST!!!!!
     Rating:
This collection is a wonderful, five-star addition to John Denver's legacy. If you are a Denver fan at all, BUY IT!

The casual fan might look at it and say, "I've got live (or studio) versions of most of these songs on other CDs." But as a couple of the other reviewers noted, this collection offers many of the songs in different arrangements and settings than live recordings that have been released previously.

To hear the "Foxfire Suite" performed with a symphony orchestra _ WOW!
For this collection, Denver fans owe a big THANK-YOU to STUART RUBIN, who chose the songs, and KRIS O'CONNOR, who produced it. This fan also would like to thank HAL THAU, MILTON OKUN, JOAN CANDEE and anybody else that had a hand in making this package possible! Not to mention Denver himself _ John, I hope you're reading this somewhere out there! _ and the many extremely talented musicians he worked with on all of these recordings.

There is no doubt in my mind that Denver was at his best when he performed live because he brought such joy and enthusiasm to the stage. And he always had those terrific supporting musicians and singers. The audience responded to that. And even when it was just him and his guitar, the enjoyment he got from singing to people was very evident.

There are three very minor quibbles with this collection. The third one, which I will elaborate on in a moment, also was mentioned by a couple of the other reviewers.

The first quibble is the fact that although the first disc is a full 74-plus minutes, the second and third discs are each around 60 minutes. It's a shame the latter two discs weren't filled to the brim as well. There must be plenty of additional live material that could have been used for that purpose.

That's because Denver apparently was recorded live quite often, both when he was with RCA and later on his own Windstar label. There must be additional songs from the seven concerts represented in this collection that could have been included. Or additional unreleased songs from "Live at the Sydney Opera House," the "Wildlife Concert" and "Sing Australia" shows, which have been previously released, to name a few. Then there is the LP of "Live in London" from late 1975, which has never been put on CD at all. I could go on.

BUT ALL OF THIS MEANS THAT A VOLUME II OF "IN CONCERT" IS POSSIBLE! Hint, Hint!

The second quibble I have is related to the first. For some reason, two versions of the song "Is It Love?" were included in the set. It would have been preferable to me if another live song from the vaults had been included instead.

The third minor quibble I have with this set is the liner notes, which leave it to the listener to figure out which concerts 41 of the 45 songs are taken from. But as another reviewer stated, that is not too hard in most cases.

Considering the timeframes of when the songs were originally released on studio albums, the instruments and/or orchestra that can be heard, and Denver's occasional between-songs comments, here is my list of where I believe the songs were recorded (for reference I have included the track list below).

With the exception of one song, Disc I is taken entirely from the show at Wolftrap in Virginia, where Denver performed with the Washington National Symphony in June 1995. The lone exception is Track 7, "Old English Folk Song," which, as noted in the liner notes, comes from the show in Harrogate, England, five years earlier. Track 13 on Disc II, "Calypso," also comes from the Wolftrap show.

Tracks 1-3, 5-9 and 11-12 on Disc II come from the Ames, Iowa, show in September 1987. On those songs, Denver is solo with his guitar, except on Track 12, "Flying for Me." When he did that song in concert in the mid-1980s as his tribute to the Challenger astronauts, I recall he played his guitar and sang live while accompanied by the studio recording of the orchestra he used on the "It's About Time" album. According to the liner notes, he also used a piano string quartet at the Ames show, and that might be what the listener hears on this recording. I'm not sure.

Tracks 4 and 10 on Disc II, along with Tracks 1-10 and 13 on Disc III, are from the show at the Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) Performing Arts Center in June of 1980. In that show, Denver had ace backup from James Burton, Hal Blaine, Glen D. Hardin, Jim Horn, Herb Petersen, Danny Wheetman, Rene Armand-Horn and Chuck Fiori.

Track 14 on Disc II and Tracks 14-15 on Disc III are from the Star Lake (Pa.) show in June of 1995. The liner notes for that show say Denver was backed by Chris Nole, Alan Deremo, Michito Sanchez and Pete Huttlinger. That is most of the backing group he used for the "Wildlife Concert" the same year.

The four songs from the venues in Britain are covered in the liner notes. I feel reasonably confident about the rest of this listing, although others may disagree.
