(3.5 stars)      Rating:      I stumbled upon I Am Ghost well after the release of their debut EP and first full-length recording but quickly became a fan of their dark yet playful screamo-rock sound once I did. Many call them emo but their music's not at all depressing. With LOVERS' REQUIEM I was not floored but quite taken by their clever, if not slightly macabre lyrics and their less then conventional approach to an often lackluster style of music. There was real depth heard in their melodies, layered with stunning complexity and surprising maturity, but I find myself not nearly as impressed with their sophomore effort, THOSE WE LEAVE BEHIND. I do enjoy some of this album but upon my first couple listens I was very disillusioned. I couldn't believe that this was the same band I heard on LOVERS' REQUIEM. Lost is all I loved about that album and in its place was simply ordinary and, dare I even say...boring. I do, however, like their opening intro, "We Dance With Monsters", and a few others like "Don't Wake Up", "So, I Guess This Is Goodbye", and "Make Me Believe This Is Real". Interestingly enough, all those songs feature the lovely Kerith whom is sadly no longer with the band. I always thought her voice contrasted nicely with Steve's lead, especially since so many of their lyrics are tragically romantic. At the time I got this album I was reading a book called ghostgirl by Tonya Hurley and I thought these songs provided the perfect soundtrack to that story, so perhaps that's why it happened to grow on me more, but with no bewitched violin playing and little presence from Kerith, I'm afraid I Am Ghost was unable to bypass the sophomore curse. Another great album from I Am Ghost! A must buy.
