Travel back with me now children to a time (1974 to be exact) when rock music was a medium in transition, when rock music was expanding the boundaries of artistic expression and redefining what music itself was.
One of the most experimental bands of the late 1960's was Genesis and one of the strangest albums ever produced was the Double Album/Rock Opera The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. With a running time of 94:23 this double album is the telling of the symbolic journey of Rael, a New York City gang member who seemingly travels to another dimension where after all kinds of weird happenings he discovers who he really is.
If this "Plot" for The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway sounds somewhat confusing, well it's meant to be. I've listened to this album dozens of times throughout the years and still don't have a total grasp on what the story is entirely supposed to mean. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is a puzzle and I suspect that it was designed to be exactly that.
This album is heavy on lyrics and does have some very weird mood setting music to power the central story. My personal favorite cut from "Lamb" is the some The Lamia. Rael is enticed into a chamber with a rosewater pool. Inside the pool is three snakes with the faces and upper bodies of beautiful women. He enters the water with the Lamia and after having a strange type of sex with them they each bite him and die from his blood. With weird imagery to the max this some alone is worth the price of the album.
This was the last album that Peter Gabriel made with Genesis. He was always a very avante garde type of musician and never has it been more evident than in this album.
If you have never heard The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway I highly recommend that you get a copy. This album has been called the definitive progressive rock concept album and I would wholeheartedly agree.
Filled with everything from New York street scenes to creatures from Greek Mythology and Freudian imagery, this is not an album that should be missed.
Editorial Reviews for The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Audio Cd Amazon.com essential recording When it comes to making albums of epic proportions, few rival this magnificent production that a trip the band took to New York City inspired in 1973. The underlying story is of a street kid named Rael who, thanks in part to the realities of big city life, undergoes a weird and mystical transformation. Containing extended instrumental sections showcasing the extraordinary talents of Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins, as well as the expressive vocals and often disturbing lyrics of Peter Gabriel, this is the album that located Genesis truly on the map. --Paul Clark
