A must for die-hards; newbies, hold off.
     Rating:
Despite the excellence of his movie roles and recordings (especially the Sinatra-Riddle Capitol "concept" albums), Sinatra was rarely at his best on television--his was not the "cozy" personality the little tube seemed best suited for--the Perry Como, Andy Williams, even Dean Martin and certainly Fred Rogers comfortable type. So a viewer has to choose from the limited Sinatra TV videography with care. Avoid the compilations (numerous quickly-assembled collections, poorly documented, with inferior production values). Place the Sinatra special with Ella and Jobim ("A Man and His Music") at the very top of the list. The second is probably the newly released "Sinatra at the Sands '78", available only on the five-disc set "Sinatra-Vegas." "Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back" belongs no higher than third. It clearly offers better music than his "official" coming out of retirement at Madison Square Garden in 1974 ("The Main Event"), which was, truth be told, not an artistic triumph. Sinatra was, as happens to all singers, not in good voice on the two nights during which the event was held (especially the second, a "live" Sunday night telecast that was "painful" for some of us to listen to-- twice, when the Monday morning detractors at work began "piling on." Some of us even questioned if he was not overly hasty in his decision to come back).

But Sinatra was truly back, and would soon convincingly validate a fan's belief in his exclusive right to the titles of America's greatest singer and entertainer, the Master Storyteller, American's favorite swinger and saloon singer, the Chairman of the Board, the "Voice" of the century. This DVD can be unreservedly recommended to Sinatra die-hards like me. To those not as yet convinced, start with a collection of his '40s Columbias, then to the '50s Capitols, finally to the '60s Reprises, then to the aforementioned two DVDs, and finally to this DVD. His was a career lasting over 60 years! His musicianship should not be judged based upon a single performance.

Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back With A Vengeance!
     Rating:
Frank Sinatra's retirement in 1971 dealt a crushing blow the world of music. Its biggest, brightest, most ttalented and influential star, had left the stage to enjoy his Autumn years. Gone were the long nights in Vegas, the great records, the sold out performances, and the most magnificent musical voice known to man.

Fortunately, it didn't last long. By 1973, the bug had bitten Frank once again. He was ready to return to where he rightfully belonged - in front of an audience, microphone in hand, backed by the orchestra, singing the songs he loved to the people he loved, with perfect timing, diction and range.

This 1973 comeback special is, aside from 1982's "The Man And His Music", my favoeite of all Frank's tv special. Brimming with style, elegance and excitement, Frank was clearly glad to be back, and his audience was thrilled to have him back.

The show begins with Frank greeting his guests (ncluding Lucille Ball, Sammy Davis Jr. and Fred Astaire), smiling, lost in the magic of the ocassion. He then launches into a passionate rendition of "You Will Be My Music" that gets a wonderful reception.

Then the fun begins, as Frank swings through the songs that made him a legend. "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Street Of Dreams", "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "I've Got The World On A String" are fired off in rapid fire succession, each more energetic and expertly performed than the next. Frank's voice was still fairly close to the condition it was in 15 years ago, so hestills manages to maintain the songs' youthful vitality.

Afterthis magical trip down to Memory Lane, we fade away from the theatrics to the obligatory Saloon Song medley, a trademark section of all of Frank's tv specials. Featuring Frank alone, wandering alone in a darkened saloon, reminiscing about lost love. The medley starts off and is essentially buolt around "Last Night When We Were Young". "Violets For Your Furs" is sweet, but the highlight is the brief, bonechilling rendition of "Here's That Rainy Day". Frank really lunders the emotional depths of this song, and he scores every time.

After this, we return to the festivities, as Frank looks back on his movie career, and brings out special guest Gene Kelly. The two perform an absolutely spectacular dance routine that will blow your mind. To watch these two legends together is a thrill that's very to difficult to describe. It may be cliched to say this, but you have to see it to believe it.

After this remarkable performance, Frank turns to material from hsi then new album, which shared its name with the tv special. First is a triumphant rendition of Paul Anka's magnificent "Let Me Try Again", followed by a poigant, almost heartbreaking rendition of "Send In The Clowns". The show lcoses with a reprise of "You Will Be My Music", which this time is done in its entirety.

Overall, this is a fantastic show that no Sinatra fan should be without. The video and sound quality is a bit shoddy but also is an improvement over the other Sinatra dvds on the market. Get thiso ne when youg et the chance. You won't be sorry.

This 1973 televised concert announced to the world that Frank Sinatra's retirement was over. In a setting that balances the intimacy of nightclubs with a concert hall layout, Sinatra (backed by a 40 piece orchestra led by Gordon Jenkins and Don Costa) confidently delivers a slate of quintessentially Frank tunes: "I Get a Kick Out of You," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "I've Got the World on a String," and a short medley of ballads. A series of "singing sailor" film clips introduces guest star Gene Kelly, who joins Sinatra in a self-effacing song and dance number called, "We Can't Do That Anymore," followed by a gentle Kelly tap dance to Sinatra's rendition of "Nice and Easy." Having mined the past, Sinatra looks to the future with three new numbers: "Let Me Try Again," the beautiful "Send in the Clowns," and "You Will Be My Music." Sinatra's voice is no longer in its prime, but his phrasing and showmanship are topnotch and his interaction with an audience nice and easy. The Chairman of the Board wasn't just back, he was back on top singing his songs. --Sean Axmaker
