     Above and beyond!
     Rating:
This was the first Fall Out Boy album I ever picked up, so perhaps I'm a bit biased. But it was very catchy, the lyrics were pure genius (got stuck in my head for days and even put out as away messages and headlines on MySpace, Facebook, AIM, and MSN). I was only in middle school when I discovered them, so I may be a bit biased.

Four stars, because although the album is good, Pete's voice is quite nasaly and confusing in a good number of the songs. Also, very complicated song titles... some even rivaling Panic At the Disco.

Anyway, it's very good for teenagers, but I don't recommend it to people out of that category. They just won't understand it.

not perfect, but certainly not bad at all
     Rating:
"Dance, Dance" is probably my least favorite song on this album, even though it's one of their biggest hits. "Sugar, We're Going Down" is not a bad song, but "A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More Touch Me" does a better job at actually being a well constructed song, and, oddly enough, it was the last song the record company chose as a single from this album. "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner" is a really good song, in fact this CD is almost loaded with 'em, although the opener is probably the dumbest excuse for a song. I mean, it makes the whole album look bad, 'cause it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth (figuratively speaking, although I do tend to get physically effected by what I listen to...); it's like a song that shoves its private parts in your face and then says "sorry, you'll never have me", just leaves you unfulfilled, or it does me anyway. The 2nd song is pretty good, but sometimes it doesn't do enough to treat the disappointment caused by trk #1. Then the 3rd song has been all over the radio for the last 3 or so years, kind of annoying to pay for a CD that's already been shoved down your throat b4 you even bought it. Supposing you aren't annoyed to the point of almost screaming by this time, the CD will pick up by track #5 - "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner", and continues to be an overall lively and compelling experience throughout the remaining 8 songs. Just don't expect some mind blowingly "original" experience, i.e.: Bjork or Radiohead, and know that this is POP, where formula is almost as important as the emotional resonance the song has.

The cleverness of Fall Out Boy's lyrical content is immediately evident by looking at the song titles on their sophomore disc, From Under the Cork Tree. "A Little Less 'Sixteen Candles,' a Little More 'Touch Me,'" "I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me" and "Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year" are but a small taste of the group's acerbic attitude. After FOB's indie debut hit the underground charts, the group's sudden indie-style success made for a fast growth spurt. Their appeal is obvious, from frontman Patrick Stump's Killer-esque pipes (especially evidenced in the disc-closing "XO") to their very melodic teen-angst anthems. While much of the disc operates at usual punk-pop speed, the highlight comes from a slower, emotion-laden cut called "I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth." This song of living in the public while working through private pain is a beautiful, multilayered number that stays with you long after the album is over. --Denise Sheppard
