Reviews Customer Reviews for From Elvis In Memphis Am I the only one? Rating: Although this will get buried on the last page I can only say that anyone who has actually listened to (and thought about) The Memphis Record will agree that the album on offer here -- From Elvis In Memphis -- is just more of the same schmaltz that almost ruined Elvis' career in the first place. The shock of The Memphis Record -- what made it new at that point in his career -- was the Memphis sound. Several reviewers have naively called this a "muddy" mix, which this re-release allegedly corrects. They are mistaking a driving rhythm section and a pared-down mix for poor audio quality (and I wonder how many other masterpieces they are missing out on as a result of this misconception). It's not called "From Memphis" simply because it was recorded there (like "Dusty In Memphis", right?). The version on offer here misses out on all the bolt-of-lightening-out-of-nowhere impact of The Memphis Record, largely because of its anemic and regressive mix (vocals far too up-front, hard L-R pan). Yes, the sound was muddy at times (e.g. Inherit the Wind) but reviewers are confusing recording engineering for production; the engineering on From Elvis in Memphis is great, but the production is wrongheaded and banal. Do yourself a favor and buy a used version of The Memphis Record CD; you'll never go back.
Customer Reviews for From Elvis In Memphis Cd Come for the classics and stay for the rest. Rating: I'm very new to buying Elvis recordings, and my main reason for buying this CD is to get the classics "Kentucky Rain", "In the Ghetto", and "Suspicious Minds". The surprise here is that this is great stuff all the way through. I totally understand why some say that this was his finest album (even though two of the songs I bought it for are bonus tracks).
All in all, a great choice for the newbie Elvis music collector.
