     Strong Guitars, Solid Vocals
     Rating:
This is the band Cold's third release and it's just as rockin' as the previous albums. Singer Scooter Ward has always delivered a strong solid performance, showing off his vocal ranges of low to angrier louder ones, all ending in great harmonies. The band has made a tight, well produced album. Guitarists Kelly Hayes and Terry Balsamo show up here playing very well together, with their interesting guitar lines, making the chemistry of the band work. Throughout Year of the Spider Scooter Ward's lyrics are very heart felt and sincere. They aren't you're typical shallow sex/girls topics. He sings about personal issues within his life with his family (his sister's battle with cancer) and does have songs about relationships, but they are more heart-felt and don't contain cheesy lyrics like a lot of rock bands.

One of my favorite tracks is "Suffocate", which has guest vocalist Sierra Swan in which in the chorus Scooter and Sierra play the relationship of boyfriend and girlfriend arguments of the typical lying. It's quite humorous in it's own subtle way. The guitars are strong and chunky and the vocals are adventurous and solid throughout the whole album. Other songs on the album are "Whatever You Became", "Stupid Girl" and "Don't Belong". This is a great album.

     Not just for metalheads
     Rating:
If you've heard other albums from Cold and wish to compare Year of the Spider with them, this review can't offer much - I haven't heard 'em.

If you like melodic metal, this may well be an album for you. That being said, if Year of the Spider is metal, it's probably close to as soft as metal can get before it becomes something else - alternative or rock, I guess.

The production standards (eg. what they've done with Ward's voice, and ensuring that all instruments are generally clearly audible) are pretty high. McCandless' drumming seems at times to be pretty basic, but Marshall's bass line is often fairly inventive. Ward's troubled personal life naturally has a significant impact on the lyrics, which are generally appealing but occasionally stray into stereotypical territory for metal - from memory, I think he actually mentions the need to scream (eg. 'hear me scream') on 3 separate occasions. Otherwise, the only major fallback is an utterly useless 13-minute silence at the end of track 13, before the hidden track - annoying if you're playing the CD anywhere other than on a PC or laptop.

The catchy anthem 'Stupid Girl' presents itself immediately as single material, but in a good way. 'Remedy' makes a good album starter, and 'Wasted Years' is a particularly striking emotional mover (maybe too much so if your preference is for heavier stuff). If you dig grunge, watch out for 'The Day Seattle Died', an homage to Alice in Chains' Layne Staley. Overall, a pretty good listen.
