Customer Reviews for Rogha The Best Of Clannad
Variety in the Best of Clannad
     Rating:
I ordered this CD to listen to as a means to unwind on the drive home from work; while it wasn't the type of instrumental that I thought it would be, the variety and different selections are all enjoyable. There are vocals, some upbeat and others with a slower beat and tempo; overall, I like this CD very much. I would order more by this group, but I would not play it for the relaxed and more meditative winding down I mentioned earlier.

Customer Reviews for Rogha The Best Of Clannad Cd
Somewhat mistitled: More of a sample of their work from 1983 to 1987.
     Rating:
This collection of 19 songs entitled "Rogha:The Best of Clannad" might sound like a comprehensive retrospective of their work but it is a bit of a misnomer. It actually only spans the years of 1983 to no later than 1987 during their "Sirius" album which makes this album more of a 'Sampler 1983-87' CD in my book.

That is not to discredit this album though. In fact, I think it's a marvelous collection of songs that strike a perfect balance between their more traditional pre-Magical Ring era and the Post-Sirius releases.

Some tracks like "Searchrain Charin Tsiail", "Ancient Forest", "Buachaill In Eire", are easily in the neighborhood of their early years and should satisfy those who aren't into albums like "Banba" or later.

Some like "Something To Believe In", "Second Nature" and "In Search of A Heart" are almost pure commercial pop with little Celtic instruments at all through but are still very enjoyable for those who really like late 1980s electronic pop.

My favorite songs on this CD are the sweeping epic "Newgrange", the spunky Irish pop of "Closer to Your Heart", "Ancient FOrest", "Second Nature" and "In A Lifetime" with U2 lead singer Bono.

Overall, Rogha is certainly a worthy purchase though the era it covers is very limited but it still covers a great diversity of material that Clannad came out with during the early to late 1980s.

People may argue whether or not this 19-track, 65-minute compilation qualifies as the best of Clannad, but few would argue that it showcases the Irish group's striking diversity. No question it includes some of Clannad's best-known selections, including pop-single cameos by Bruce Hornsby ("Something to Believe In") and Bono of U2 ("In a Lifetime"), plus its career-propelling "Theme From Harry's Game." It also touches on the group's beat-heavy forays into pop-rock ("In Search of a Heart," the jam-filled "Second Nature," the Fleetwood Mac-like "Northern Skyline.") The disc's most attractive feature, however, is its sampling of Clannad's varied approach to Celtic styles, performed at times with an ethereal, traditional delicacy ("Newgrange," "Ta Me Mo Shui," the Enya-like "Now Is Here"), and at other times with beguiling hints of contemporary influences (such as the faint country strains floating through "Buachaill on Eirne"). An interesting listen. --Terry Wood
