     Lovely Album
     Rating:
Irish musicians at the peak of their ability. Beautiful songs, excellent variety. If you like the "smooth jazz" equivalent of Celtic, with musical ambience that includes synth wash, close harmonies, energetic instrumentation but without clanging, jarring amped up fiddle, whistle, etc., this music is for you.

One particularly moving, standout track that is one of the best they've done: Of this Land.

     Once again, Clannad strikes gold!
     Rating:
Clannad's 1998 album, and as of this writing, their last proper-studio album "Landmarks" is a very respectable follow-up to their previous album "Lore" which I thought was and still is a marvelous adventure. Though the album doesn't quite stack up as high, "Landmarks" still manages to be a wonderful and touching album. The album has a slightly grayer mood as emphasized by the album cover artwork.

The opening track "Al Gleann" sets the mood of the album with a somber atmosphere and haunting echoing vocals that are typical of post-Fuaim Clannad. "The Golden Ball" is among my favorite song with a gorgeous and jazzy mood that reminds me of cloudy autumn evenings by the lakefronts of Wisconsin. The next two tracks are pleasant enough though sometimes get weighed down a bit by getting too close to sounding like elevator music at times. The closing track "Loch Na Cailli" ends the album on a hauntingly beautiful note with a very somber instrumental note similar to that of the closing track on "Lore".

Clannad's particular mix of Celtic, pop, and ambient styles is in fine form on this album, with no lapses in performance. They're as smooth as ever, and they should be after so many years together. While their more pop-oriented songs, such as "Court to Love" and "The Golden Ball," are pretty but unexceptional, Clannad really shines on the more traditional songs. These include the fast-paced, heavily rhythmic "A Mhuirnín Ó," the sorrowful "The Bridge of Tears," and the smooth, relaxed "An Gleann," which is the most successful blend of pop and traditional styles on the album. Máire Brennan's voice has never been more beautiful or controlled, and Landmarks is a fine effort all around. --Genevieve Williams
